Poem - "Forest"

The sky is grey, and I have lost my way;
For my foolish wanderings I now pay.
I know not what possessed me on this day
and led me to walk down this path astray.

Countless oak trees stretch out before my eyes
Branches winding as though to touch the skies
The wind whistles faintly throughout the air
As though to mock and deride without care

I glance around and see the path long gone
Now left with no recourse, I wander on
A sea of leaves bristles over my head
Cursing me with a growing sense of dread

Soon a clearing I find myself approach
Through its entrance I hastily encroach
In the middle, a pond seems to await
Could this finding be a sign of good fate?

Like a mirror, the water is so clear
Sky above reflected as I draw near
I gaze at the surface, and soon I find
A deadly beast lurking not far behind!

I spin around, my eyes wide with terror
Yet nothing there; was I just in error?
A howl echoes throughout the wooded sky
Is it the wind? Or a predator's cry?

I glance from side to side, pulse quickening
My head swimming and stomach sickening
I soon race off into the woods once more
My feet pounding against the forest floor

Did the shadow there move? What did I find?
Chased by a beast, or perhaps my own mind?
Is it a delusion? Or am I prey?
The sky is grey, and I have lost my way.
